Never seen her shift so fast when I opened the viv and she had gone VOOM and down the tiniest crack in the skirting board before I could get hold of her! We tracked her down in the cellar coming out of a hole in the ceiling near the chimney breast, and i got hold of her but no chance, she muscled off back through the hole
So now I am stumped. I'll try looking again when it gets dark and I've put one of her hides near where she vanished, left her viv ajar and had the room upside down looking for her. Trouble is, if she got in the floorboards we are screwed: sealed wooden floor and no way we can rip it up
Will try checking anywhere warm (other half has a pc in the cellar acting as a server but has just replaced it with one that doesnt give out much heat!)
Only fed her on Tuesday so a dead mouse aint gonna entice her either .. Worse still, weve got very inquisitive cats.
My poor baby. Shes only about 2ft long and stick thin (pueblan milk snake and only about 7m old)

Found Indiana a few days later in the top draw of our gloves and scarf draw.

Looking behind/under/inside the back of fridges and freezers is another good little hidey place for them. The motor and compressors get lovely and warm. |

Hi James as other posters will tell you (and me) dont give up. There's still no sign of Sssid but last Monday night two of the cats seemed awfully interested in something under the cooker. I couldnt see anyting when I got the torch out but she might well have slithered out of sight by then.
Ive got the heatmat rigged up on a high shelf in the cellar with a shallow RUB and aspen plus hide and theres a drinking bowl too. Gave up on the dead mice they were just slowly decomposing. But we did buy a couple of pet gerbils at the weekend and theres always the chance she might be attracted to the ratty smell... Not that Im planning on feeding them to her!
Other snake owners have since come forward to say theirs have escaped and turned up weeks or months later, usually in the bathroom and been discovered quite by chance. Im still checking all the obvious hidey holes and hoping she doesnt get outside or next door (neighbour would have a fit). Im missing my little black, red and white friend and her viv just looks empty now.
Hope your little runaway turns up: I suspect they tend to slither around the edges of rooms and will use any means of getting to warmth and water, which might include crawling through floorboards and along pipes or cables... And having seen what little Ssssid climbed up and through, a stair tread and carpet might not stop yours going upstairs, so keep checking the bathroom and beds xK. |

Read this article yesterday and hoped I would never have to find my Indiana, Florida King snake, but low and behold I went to feed her today and she has vanished.
I wonder whether she sneaked out of her viv on Saturday when I left her door open when changing her water. She has never shown any inclination to escape via this route when I have left the doors open.
I will try the bottle trick and keep you posted.
Do snakes climb carpeted steps or is she likely to stay downstairs (She is 3 and a half feet long)?
Any other tips?

Thats a great idea! We wondered if she might lurk round the pc thats down there but a heatmat cosy bed might be just the thing... Will all and get a spare and get it rigged up |

If she seems to have come down into the cellar, have you thought about making a nice warm hidey hole near where the gap is that she poked her head out of?
A heatmat plugged in with a pillow case on top will make a lovely warm hidey hole.
As it's for a Search and rescue type operation and would be checked regularly you wouldn't need to bother with a stat for it either.

Cheers Welly, will give that a try: I keep sneaking downstairs and giving it the CSI treatment with the torch just in case she sneaks back out somewhere. Its so cold in our cellar I can't see her wanting to stay under the floor there, especially now the heating is off and no warm pipes to lurk near... Can't beliee how stupid I was to not realise she could move so fast and into such tiny, tiny openings in the edge of the skirting... |

Get some 2 litre bottles, cut the tops off about 4" down, invert the tops and throw in some mice. Never fails. Put them near all holes and openinfs |
