I've recently gotten a new kingsnake and after letting him/her settle in for a week I've begun handling. He has a tendency to bite, I've read that this is to be expected with young kingsnakes not used to handling, I was just wondering what would be the best method to get him off when he bites?

He's not musked me so far and it's during the actual handling process. He doesn't strike at all he just opens his mouth and latches on randomly.

Also he/she's a californian kingsnake.

What kind of kingsnake is it? Does he bite when you are trying to remove him from the enclosure or during the handling process? Have you noticed any behaviors that indicate he is about to bite (tail vibrating, defensing coiling, etc.)? Has he musked you at any point?

Thanks for that. I'll probably use the cool water method.

it will, chances are by pulling him back you may be pulling out some of his teeth this may also lead to infection.

Thanks :) I'll try that next time. So far I've just been pulling him back gently but I was worried that this could possibly hurt him.

there are a few methods one is to let him come off when hes finished but that may take some time. A gentle spray with cool water not cold will more than likely make him release or alcohol gel just where his nose is can work also.
