Hi, I got my first California king snake home today and noticed that when he is moving vertically or exploring over his hides he has an occasional tremor. It's a small jerky movement that I didn't see when I saw the snake a week ago or today when picking him up. At first I thought he was pressing his skin against the plastic of his home and was just juddering because of that but now I'm not so sure as its happened whilst holding him as well as in his home. I wondered if it is just him exploring and possibly nervous about being in a new home, or if this is illness related. When he is moving around lower down all movment is completely smooth, it only appears to happen when he is lifting higher to look around.... But not every time.

He is 4 months old. I have moved him into a breeding box with 2 hides and have a heat mat over one end at 27 degrees.

I'd be greatful for any information that you can provide.
Thanks,
Nicola x

can't help with the judder, i'm afraid- pe4rsonally i'd be inclined to fork out on a vet consult....

27 is on the low side for a king- you need to tweak upwards to the 30-31 degrees C mark-

(maybe he's shivering?????
best of luck

Hi, I've moved him to a warmer room so he doesn't get too cold. He's around 31 degrees C ATM. I was told in reptile shops and by a breeder that I didn't need a thermostat but after reading all the posts here and the one about the burned snake I've got one coming In a day or so. Ill be watching my thermometer lots while I'm waiting.

I have spoke to a shop, a breeder and a vet re the tremor and they think its nervous with being in a new environment so I'm going to see how he goes and if he feeds ok in the week and fingers crossed he will settle. If not I'll be going back to the vet (she was a snake specialist) so she can have a proper look. I'm limited on my computer access (i use my phone) but if I get chance I'll still try and pop a vid on I anyone does want to have a look.

Thanks guys :)

Thanks deadmansfinger, I was getting quite worried about him as its mostly his head with the jerky movements... Not seen him rattle his tail yet! Hope he settles soon. Thermostat is on its way also so I'll be able to set a better temp for him as I'm having to heat the whole room up to help ATM.
I'll make sure I keep our progress posted :)

What heat source are you using for your snakes? I have a heat mat under the plastic breeding box as that was what I was recommended.

He's looking much calmer already. Think he was just nervous in his new home. It just worried me as I started googling and finding all sorts of illnesses that's snakes have with it as a symptom! He had a meal last on wed too whichever me feel better that he was more comfortable in his new surroundings. :)
