I've just got a new ruby eye lavender king snake, and have a question regarding UV lighting.
I've read various conflicting advice, some saying that they don't require UV's, some saying they do, and some saying it'd be beneficial.
At the moment he/she is in a little faun at the moment until we can sort out a viv we acquired yesterday, it's got a few drilled holes in it that need filling in, plus I'm waiting for the silicon to dry fully before we finish off the full setup.
So basically what I'm asking is, do you guys use UV? If so can any one recommend one for a 30inch vivarium?

I was really hoping that was going to be the conclusion! We weren't 100% sure as they're diurnal, so I'd rather have got advice from owners, other than random care sheets :P

The only lights I have in my king vivs are low wattage LED ones. They give off enough light to allow better visibility in the vivs/stacks and to give a much better photoperiod for the snakes, yet cost a fraction of any other bulb to run and have no real heat coming off them which is perfect.

I dunno why people have suggested a uv light, most of them are tubes and a king would break one of those within a few seconds of coiling round it I reckon. Whereas normal bulbs (even most energy saver ones) get VERY hot so would need a protective guard.

Yeah, that's another thing I was concerned about, I'd end up getting a standard light, mainly for viewing, and for the daily cycle, but I need to find a good brand that don't explode or break after a few months. Learnt the hard way with some bulbs!

I have some push LEDs for my snakes. Only ever use them when its dark and I need to do a water change or a spot check! Then again when it is summer the snakes get plenty of light even the ones at the bottom of the stack.

I'm probably going to do the same as what we have for our Royal, mainly because the vivarium I'm planning on moving him into is almost pitch black inside, even with the sun light coming in through the window! I'd be interested in seeing the LED's though.
